Go Skateboarding Day 2021

Hi internet. I haven't written outside of work for about four years apparently, so here you go.

What started as a dream turned into reality as it often does for TPR. No, seriously, he makes shit happen. Like we kinda talk about doing a lot of crazy things but we'll follow through on it more often than not.

Boosting the local skate scene has been this guy's sole goal for the last few years we've worked together. What better way to do so than host a contest?

On the most recent Go Skateboarding Day, June 21, 2021, he meshed his love of DIY projects — see The Boneyard Kings and TPR's DIY Builds — and hosting just legendary skateboarding events.

We filmed the creation of the ledge used at a classic Regina spot, the red brick set in Wascana Park, and its testing. We also tested out the ramp he built to turn the double set in front of the legislative building into a euro-gap. That's featured here.

The day started in front of the legislative building in Regina, then moved to the red brick set just north.

Then there was the "Albert Street Takeover" where a big crew hopped on their boards and skated about 5.5 kilometres up Albert Street between the red brick spot and the 306 Shop. The first person to the shop was to walk away with $100.

Every trick landed earned $5 and the top three tricks at each spot walked away with fresh decks and cash prizes. Best bails took home prizing too.

Basically any kind of skateboard accessory you can imagine was given away. Tattoo gift cards went up, too. Boards were given away at the shop after.

Shout outs to 306 Shop and Totally Rad Skateboarding for contributing, hosting and just generally being awesome.

I have no clue how many people actually made it out. After a year of lockdowns, restrictions and other such nonsense, it was an amazing feeling to see some of these people again. There were people I've skated with in Regina, Saskatoon and Prince Albert all in one place. It was kind of surreal to see everyone together.

The skateboarding community in Saskatchewan is severely underrated and underrepresented on the national stage.

I feel we're slept on a bit by those who only dream of skating Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto or Montreal in Canada and frankly I wouldn't have it any other way.

The community here is pretty damn incredible and to be a part of it for nearly 10 years now has been such a journey.

The Go Skate Day 2021 video goes live on July 9 at 4:30 p.m. CST. Watch it here.

There's another contest coming up later this month; again it has incredible community support from the most unexpected places. I'm bringing a homie down from Prince Albert to participate in that one and we'll see what we can do about shooting photos at that one, too!

Until next time, internet! Maybe it'll be next week. Maybe it'll be in four years, who knows!
